Biography

George L. Burnham, Jr. began his career with Suwannee County in January, 1973, with the Property Appraiser. He was elected to the office of Suwannee County Tax Collector in September of 1976.

Under his leadership, many improvements have been made such as: extended office hours, mobile home decal enforcement, non-ad-valorem roll preparation & collection for the county commission, full service drivers license & collection of tourist development tax. Credit card processing & internet services are his latest attempt to bring innovation to this office.

A lifelong resident of Suwannee County, George graduated from Suwannee High School & attended Lake City Community College & North Florida Jr. College. He has been an active community leader throughout his career, serving as a past or current member of the following organizations:

· Chairman, Florida Tax Collector Service Corporation 2001-2006
· President of Florida Tax Collector’s Association 2006-2007
· Former President, Suwannee County Chamber of Commerce 1990-1991
· Member, Live Oak Rotary Club
· Member, Westwood Baptist Church
· Past Board member, Westwood Christian School
· Member, Advent Christian Village Citizen Advisory Board
· President, Lake Louise Estates Homeowners Association
· Board of Associates, Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch
· Past chairman, local blood bank & 11 gallon donor
· Served 11 years in Florida National Guard 1970-1981

George & his wife, Sheila, have been married over 32 years & have owned & operated 2 retail music stores in Live Oak and Lake City for the past 28 years. They have 2 lovely daughters & 2 beautiful granddaughters. George's hobbies are reading newspapers & "wanna be scratch golfer".
